Premier League for Beginners: Teams, Points, Fixtures, Promotion & Relegation

New to the Premier League? Learn how the 20-team league works, how points and the table work, why fixtures move, and how promotion and relegation connect it to the Championship.

The Premier League becomes much easier to follow once you understand five ideas: 20 clubs, home and away fixtures, points, the league table, and promotion/relegation.

You do not need to know every player, manager or club history before watching a match. Start with the competition itself.

1. What is the Premier League?

The Premier League is the top division of the English men’s league football system.

It contains 20 clubs. Each club plays every other club twice during a normal league season: once at home and once away.

That gives each club 38 Premier League matches and creates 380 league fixtures across the competition.

The Premier League is a league competition, so results across the season accumulate into one table rather than every match being part of a knockout bracket.

2. How does a season work?

A normal league programme gives every club the same basic task:

19 opponents × home and away = 38 matches.

The fixture list sets out when those league meetings are planned, but the published date or kick-off time can later move.

The table develops throughout the season as clubs collect points.

This article deliberately does not reproduce a live fixture list or live standings. Those are changing datasets rather than evergreen explanations.

3. How do points work?

The basic system is simple:

  • win = 3 points
  • draw = 1 point
  • loss = 0 points

A club’s points from all league matches determine its main position in the table.

The maximum from 38 wins would therefore be 114 points, but understanding that theoretical maximum is less important than understanding the 3–1–0 system.

4. What does the table mean?

The table is the season’s running order of the 20 clubs.

Points come first. If clubs finish level on points, tie-break criteria are used. Under the current Premier League rules described for this structure, goal difference is the first separator, followed by goals scored and then head-to-head criteria.

Goal difference is:

goals scored − goals conceded

A positive goal difference means the club has scored more league goals than it has conceded.

Tie-break rules can be amended over time, so detailed edge cases should be verified against the current competition rules rather than treated as permanent.

5. What happens at the top?

The club that finishes first in the table is the Premier League champion.

High league positions can also lead to qualification for UEFA club competitions. However, the exact European qualification allocation can vary with competition rules and season-specific circumstances.

For that reason, this beginner guide does not freeze a permanent formula for European places into its evergreen core.

If European qualification matters to a particular season, use a dated current-season source.

6. What happens at the bottom?

The clubs finishing 18th, 19th and 20th are relegated from the Premier League to the EFL Championship.

That movement is one of the defining differences between English league football and a closed league: membership can change from season to season.

A famous club name or long Premier League history does not guarantee permanent membership.

7. Where do promoted clubs come from?

The EFL Championship is the division directly below the Premier League.

Three clubs come up from the Championship to replace the three relegated Premier League clubs.

Under the current promotion structure, the Championship’s top two earn automatic promotion and the remaining promotion place is decided through the Championship play-offs.

The important beginner concept is:

Premier League bottom three ↓ Championship
Three Championship clubs ↑ Premier League

That annual movement changes which clubs belong in current-season Premier League content.

8. Why can fixtures change?

A fixture release is not a guarantee that every match will remain at its originally published date and time.

Premier League matches can move because of:

  • live UK broadcast selections;
  • domestic cup commitments;
  • UEFA club competition commitments;
  • other scheduling requirements.

That is why travel or ticket planning should use the latest confirmed match information rather than an old fixture list.

This evergreen guide therefore does not reproduce or maintain a copied fixture database.

9. What other competitions might clubs play in?

A Premier League club’s season can contain more than Premier League matches.

English clubs can also play in domestic knockout competitions such as:

  • the FA Cup;
  • the EFL Cup.

Some clubs also qualify for UEFA club competitions.

These competitions are separate from the Premier League table. A cup defeat does not directly remove league points, and a Premier League result does not by itself advance a club through a cup knockout round.

Multiple competitions are also one reason fixture dates can change.

2026–27 snapshot

Current-season snapshot — verified 5 October 2026.

The 2026–27 Premier League has 20 clubs and a 380-match league programme.

The clubs promoted from the Championship for 2026–27 are:

  • Coventry City
  • Ipswich Town
  • Hull City

They replaced the three clubs relegated after 2025–26: Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and West Ham United.

This section is intentionally separated from the evergreen explanation. Club membership changes through promotion and relegation.

Do not use this article as a live table, current-form guide or current European-qualification tracker.

10. Where should you go next?

Once the league structure makes sense, the next question is often not “Who is top today?” but which parts of following a club interest you?

Continue to How to Choose a Premier League Team to Follow to explore clubs through geography, history, stadium context, competitive context, football identity, player connections, colours and supporter culture.

From there, Palvenor’s deeper Premier League material can add context through:

If your interest later becomes shirt/product-oriented, the separate Replica vs Authentic Football Shirts guide can help with that purchase decision. Shirt type must not determine which club you choose.

Premier League in one minute

There are 20 clubs. Each plays the other 19 home and away, giving 38 matches per club and 380 league matches. A win earns three points, a draw one and a loss none. The table determines the champion and relegation positions. The bottom three go to the Championship and three Championship clubs come up.

That is enough structure to start following the competition. The rest can be learned club by club and match by match.
