NHL Team Match: Find a Team Identity That Fits

Match your preferences with all 32 NHL teams using stable geography, history and fan-market traits—not standings, predictions or commercial influence.

Palvenor Decision Engine

Find an NHL team identity that fits your preferences

Answer eight questions about geography, history and fan context. The result is a preference match—not a power ranking, prediction or statement about current team quality.

Your answers stay in this browser and are not sent anywhere.

The article below explains the full method and lists all 32 eligible teams. Enable JavaScript to use the interactive match.

How this result is calculated

Each non-neutral answer awards the displayed question weight to every team with the matching stable profile trait. Highest total wins. Exact ties use the fixed alphabetical team order; the next two scores are shown as alternatives. This is an editorial preference match using stable identity and geography. Current form, standings, rosters, injuries, playing style, odds, prices, merchants and affiliate relationships have zero effect.

NHL Team Match is an explainable preference tool, not a ranking, prediction or official NHL product. It compares what you want from a team identity with stable editorial profiles for all 32 current clubs.

It deliberately does not use current standings, recent form, injuries, betting odds, prices, merchants or affiliate relationships. Those inputs would either date quickly or compromise the purpose of a neutral preference match.

What the eight questions use

The questions cover:

  • conference and division;
  • Canadian or US home market;
  • North American time zone;
  • the era in which the current market identity arrived;
  • geographic setting;
  • broad fan-market context;
  • Original Six, continuous expansion, relocated or recent expansion lineage.

These are stable orientation traits. They do not claim that every supporter experiences a market in the same way.

How the score works

Each non-neutral answer awards the published question weight to every team with the matching profile trait:

DimensionWeight
Geographic setting5
Division4
Current-market era3
Conference2
Country2
Time zone2
Market context2
Franchise lineage2

Choosing “no preference” contributes no points for that question. The highest total becomes the primary match and the next two scores become close alternatives.

Exact ties use a fixed alphabetical team order. This makes identical answers deterministic without pretending that a tiny invented decimal separates two equally suitable teams.

Every team has a complete stable profile and a tested answer path. No team is excluded because of current performance or commercial availability.

What is stable and what is volatile

Stable in V1: team name, current conference/division, home-market country, time zone, current-market identity era, geography and franchise-lineage class.

Volatile and excluded from V1 scoring: roster, injuries, line combinations, standings, streaks, special-teams results, coaching tactics, current playing style and championship odds.

Utah’s current identity is Utah Mammoth, which the club announced as its permanent identity in May 2025. Team names and league structure still require periodic review, even though they change much less often than roster or performance data.

Playing style is a separate evidence layer

Forechecking, transition, rush offence, cycle play, defensive structure and defence activation are useful hockey concepts. They are not hard-coded here as permanent team identities.

Read the hockey terminology guide

A future version may add current tactical evidence only if Palvenor has an approved source, clear usage rights, timestamps and a defensible refresh process. Missing current evidence will never be silently replaced with synthetic “facts”.

Confidence and trade-offs

The result’s confidence is deliberately bounded: it can explain stable identity and geography, but it cannot tell you which team is objectively best or predict whether you will enjoy following it.

Close alternatives matter. A division preference can pull in one direction while geography, time zone or team history pulls in another. The result shows alternatives so that this trade-off remains visible.

Commercial independence

Commercial value has zero effect on scoring. Merchant coverage, product availability, commission and affiliate status are neither read nor used by the engine.

No merchandise link or commercial continuation is activated by this release.

Independent status

Palvenor is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NHL or its member clubs. Team names are used for informational identification. No NHL or team logos, uniforms, player images or other proprietary visual assets are used by Team Match.

Sources and freshness

Evidence checked: 4 October 2026. Stable profile records should be reviewed when league membership, team identity, alignment or home-market facts change. Volatile hockey-performance data is outside this V1 dataset.
