How to Choose an NHL Jersey: Authentic Pro, Premium, Breakaway & More
Compare Authentic Pro, Premium, Breakaway and Practice NHL jerseys by use, construction, comfort, sizing, personalization and gift suitability.
Choosing an NHL jersey is easier when you ask what you want it to do, rather than which tier is “best”.
The current four-tier names below come from the Fanatics NHL jersey portfolio introduced for the 2024–25 season. Product details can change by season, so use the tier as a starting point and verify the exact item before buying.
Quick decision
| Priority | Start with |
|---|---|
| Closest retail option to the on-ice uniform | Authentic Pro |
| On-ice-inspired appearance in a lighter retail build | Premium |
| Comfortable supporter/everyday wear | Breakaway |
| Training-inspired style | Practice |
Authentic Pro
NHL and Fanatics launch material describes Authentic Pro as the same Made-in-Canada on-ice specification worn by NHL players, including elevated fabrics and sewn multi-layer tackle-twill graphics. Choose it when on-ice specification, construction detail or collecting is the point. That does not make it automatically best for casual wear.
Premium
Premium was described at launch as consistent with the previous highest retail level: lighter and more comfortable while visually following Authentic Pro, including sewn-down graphic techniques. It suits buyers wanting a substantial, on-ice-inspired retail jersey without requiring the exact on-ice specification.
Breakaway
Breakaway is designed specifically for fans, emphasizing comfort and style. Launch specifications describe soft, breathable, durable fabric and lightweight flexible heat-applied crests. It is a logical starting point for arenas, watch parties and everyday supporter wear.
Practice
Practice is a retail version of the clubs’ practice-jersey concept. Treat it as a different training-inspired look, not simply a cheaper game jersey.
Fit and sizing
Decide whether the jersey will be worn over a T-shirt, hoodie or closer to the body. Then use the current size guide for the exact product. A normal T-shirt size does not guarantee the correct jersey size.
Personalization
Before adding a player or custom name, verify the current player/team relationship, spelling and number, decoration method and personalized-return rules. For a gift, a blank team jersey can reduce risk if the favourite player is uncertain.
Gift sequence
Team → intended use → tier → size → player/personalization → current return conditions.
Volatile fields
Prices, stock, shipping destinations, size availability, player options, customization and returns must be checked when you shop. This guide does not promise current availability or delivery to a particular country.
Bottom line
Authentic Pro: on-ice specification. Premium: high-level on-ice-inspired retail build. Breakaway: supporter comfort. Practice: training-inspired style. There is no universal winner.
